The Chelsea game was one of the high points of the 2003-2004 season. With the club being in administration it was a big bonus, not only for the players and fans but for the bank balance, to be given this fixture against arguably one of the biggest teams in the world. With 35,997 in attendance at Stamford Bridge, it guaranteed the oldest league club in the world some valuable funds. Perhaps this was best demonstrated by the away supporters when they sang "we've only come for the money" However, the players on the pitch didn't agree as they took the game to the home side from the off. Even so, it was Chelsea who took the lead thanks to a brilliant strike from Hasselbaink only to see the Mighty Pies equalise near the half hour mark with a header from Barras. Unfortunately, an upset was not to be though. Chelsea scored twice more before Stallard came on and pulled one back to keep the away fans' hopes alive. Notts certainly gave it their all but a late goal from Cole secured Chelsea the spoils. All was not lost though as the Pies took home with them a sizeable amount of much- needed funds for the club. The winners also gave Notts County the shirts from the game to sell on the auction site Ebay. |
