Goodbye Sir Jimmy
Notts V Aldershot
27th September 2008
After all the drama of recent years - the brushes with relegation and economic collapse, there was still one final heartache to be inflicted on the Meadow Lane faithful. The death of 'Sir' Jimmy Sirrel, the greatest manager in the club's history, occurred in September 2008. Even in his later years, the Jim had stayed close to the club and still came to watch matches when he could. One of his last public appearances at the ground was in 2006 when Notts narrowly staved off relegation on the last day of the season.Few will forget the total silence in the ground when the County legend appeared on the pitch just before the game  to address the faithful.
It seemed hard then, that just two years later the fans were asked to say goodbye to the inspirational Scot who meant so much to so many. Few will argue though, that anyone can match Pies fans for dignity in hard times and on the 27th September, before the home match with Aldershot, they gathered together to pay homage to the legend of Notts County and remember the good times that were so much a part of recent history.
From Thursday evening fans had been bringing tributes to the ground to hang on the main gate.
Fans adding more tributes just before the game
Shirts, photographs and personal memorabilia were left - a testimony to how many fans felt they knew Jimmy or had  individual memories of meeting him.
As the afternoon wore on, the number of tributes continued to grow
The club was obliged to open up a new area for tributes to be laid and where more fitting than Z Block , the old home of the County Faithful.
Fans help unfurl the new flag from The Kop as part of the tribute.
Press and TV joined fans gathering outside the ground.
Players and officials join fans for a minutes applause before the match.
