After close on a decade of unswerving loyal and crunching tackles, it was no suprise that 'Mr Notts County' Ian Richardson was offered a testimonial. The date set was the Sunday before the May Day bank holiday and the opposition was the old one..... The Magpies lined up as many of their old '98 promotion side as could make it and Forest offered their usual collection of oldies and goldies. There was disappointment that the forthcoming cup final had set ex-red Teddy Sheringham against ex-Maggie Steve Finnan so both had to pull out but there were still a quite a few names and faces to interest the 2,500 plus. The result was, of course, irrelevant....except that Notts won by four goals to nil. The scoreline was due in no small part to the return of Saul Deeney who saved everything that his ex-manager Nigel Clough could fire at him whilst making a point to the home club as well. At the other end, Jones scored a trademark blaster and several thousand fans immediately inquired as to his availability for the following weekend. Richo himself stepped up to convert a penalty and get on the score sheet. Robson and Jackson completed the rout. Here's how we saw the day in pictures...... |
