After all the drama of recent years - the brushes with relegation and economic collapse, there was still one final heartache to be inflicted on the Meadow Lane faithful. The death of 'Sir' Jimmy Sirrel, the greatest manager in the club's history, occurred in September 2008. Even in his later years, the Jim had stayed close to the club and still came to watch matches when he could. One of his last public appearances at the ground was in 2006 when Notts narrowly staved off relegation on the last day of the season.Few will forget the total silence in the ground when the County legend appeared on the pitch just before the game to address the faithful. It seemed hard then, that just two years later the fans were asked to say goodbye to the inspirational Scot who meant so much to so many. Few will argue though, that anyone can match Pies fans for dignity in hard times and on the 27th September, before the home match with Aldershot, they gathered together to pay homage to the legend of Notts County and remember the good times that were so much a part of recent history. |
